Local SEO

Local SEO for Home Service Businesses

We help roofers, plumbers, HVAC companies, cleaners, movers and the trades around them show up where their customers are actually looking — the map at the top of Google.

Takes about 15 minutes on the phone. No contract to look at the audit.

When someone in your service area needs the work you do, they pull out a phone and search. What happens in the next ten seconds decides whether they call you or the company two towns over.

Local SEO is the work of making sure it’s you. Not more traffic. Not vanity rankings. Calls from people in your service area who are ready to book.

SharpQuery works almost exclusively with home service businesses across the US. We know what a roofing lead is worth, why HVAC gets brutal in July, and why a service area business needs a completely different setup than a storefront.

01

What Local SEO Means When You Don't Have a Storefront

Most SEO advice is written for businesses customers visit. Yours isn’t one of them. You drive to the customer, you cover a radius rather than a street corner, and your busiest hours might be a Saturday night when a pipe bursts.

Google has a specific classification for this — a service area business — and it changes almost everything about how you should be set up.

Local SEO for a business like yours comes down to four things working together:

Your Google Business Profile.

The listing that puts you in the map. For most home service companies this produces more calls than the website does.

Your website's local structure.

Pages for each service you offer, in each area you cover, that give Google a reason to connect you to a specific place and a specific job.

Your reputation signals.

Reviews, how recently they arrived, and what customers say in them. In trades this matters more than in almost any other industry.

Your presence across the web.

Consistent business information everywhere it appears, plus links and mentions from local and industry sources that tell Google you’re established here.

Get those four right and you compete for the searches that produce booked jobs. Get one badly wrong — and a misconfigured service area alone is enough — and the other three won’t save you.

02

The Three Places Local Customers Find You

When someone searches “emergency plumber near me,” Google shows several distinct things. They’re not equally valuable, and most agencies never explain the difference.

  • The Map Pack

Three businesses on a map, with ratings, distance and a call button. This is where most local calls come from, especially on mobile and especially for urgent work. Being here is worth more than any other single position on the page. It’s driven by your Google Business Profile.

ranking in the Map Pack →

  • Organic results

The blue links below the map. These matter for research-stage searches — “how much does a roof replacement cost,” “signs your water heater is failing,” “best pest control company in [city].” Slower to convert, but they build trust before the call and they compound over time

  • Local Services Ads and Google Ads

Paid placements above everything else. We don’t run these, but you should know where they sit. Ads give you immediate volume at a per-lead cost that never goes down. Organic and Map Pack take longer to build and then produce leads at a cost that keeps falling.

Most of our clients run ads while the organic work builds, then shift the balance as the phone starts ringing on its own.

03

Trades We Work With

We’re not a general agency taking contractors on the side. Nearly all our clients are home service businesses, because how a roofer gets found has almost nothing in common with how a law firm or a software company does.

Storm season. Emergency searches. Insurance work versus retail. Service radius. Recurring contracts versus one-off jobs. Every trade has its own demand pattern, and campaigns built around the trade beat campaigns built from a template.

Don’t see your trade? We probably still work with it. Get in touch and we’ll tell you honestly whether we’re a fit.

What a Local SEO Campaign Involves

Here’s the actual work, and where each piece fits.

  1. Google Business Profile Optimization

    Highest leverage

The highest-leverage work in local SEO for a service business. Categories, service areas, address configuration, services list, photos, posts, Q&A, and review strategy. Most contractor profiles have never been set up properly, which is why this is usually where the first month’s biggest gains come from.

  2. Map Pack Positioning

Understanding why you rank where you do across your service area, and what can realistically be moved. Position tracking by location, competitor analysis, and the work that closes the gap.

  3. Technical Foundation

Site speed on mobile, crawlability, site structure, schema markup, indexing. None of it is glamorous and all of it is load-bearing. A slow site loses calls before it loses rankings.

  4. Service and Location Pages

A page for each service you offer in each area you serve — built properly, not spun from a template with the city name swapped. Done well this is how you extend beyond the areas closest to you. Done badly it’s how sites get penalized.

  5. Local Citations and Consistency

Your business name, address and phone appearing identically everywhere online. Unglamorous, and inconsistency here quietly holds back everything else.

  6. Local Link Building

Links from suppliers, manufacturers, trade associations, local sponsorships and community organizations. White-hat only. No networks, no purchased links, nothing that puts your site at risk.

  7. Content That Answers Real Questions

Cost guides, comparison pieces, seasonal advice, insurance and warranty explainers. This is what builds authority over months and what makes your service pages rank higher than they could alone.

  8. Reviews

A repeatable system for asking after every completed job, so reviews arrive steadily rather than in bursts. Recency and consistency beat raw count.

  9. Multiple Locations

If you run several branches or a franchise, the setup is different enough to need its own approach — separate profiles, separate location pages, and a structure that doesn’t have your own locations competing with each other.

05

How Google Decides Who Shows Up

Three factors. Understanding them is the difference between realistic expectations and the promises you’ve been pitched.

  • Relevance

How well your business matches what was searched. Categories, services, content, reviews and website all feed in. This is where we have the most influence.

  • Distance

How close you are to the searcher or the area they searched. Largely fixed. A competitor two miles from the searcher has a real advantage over you at fifteen miles, for that particular search.

  • Prominence

How established and well-known your business appears. Reviews, mentions across the web, links, and general online presence.

The honest version

You will not rank equally across your whole service area, and you shouldn’t expect to. What works is dominating the areas closest to you first, then extending outward with location pages, content and local signals — area by area, over months.

Anyone promising you the top spot everywhere either doesn’t understand proximity or is counting on you not to.

Local SEO vs Buying Leads

Most home service owners come to us while paying for leads from Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack or Local Services Ads. Those platforms work — they’re just a different arrangement, and it’s worth being clear about the trade-off.

Lead platforms

What it gives you

Volume, immediately, with no ramp-up. Useful when you need work this month.

What it costs you

The lead is usually sold to three or four competitors, so you’re racing to call first and discounting to win. The per-lead price rises over time and you don’t control it. And when you stop paying, it all stops — you’ve built nothing.

Local SEO

What it gives you

Leads that are exclusively yours, at a cost per lead that falls as the work compounds, on an asset you own. Your profile, your rankings, your site, your reviews. If you fired us tomorrow, all of it would keep working.

What it costs you

Time. Four to six months before it’s carrying real weight.

Most of our clients run both at first and shift the budget as organic picks up. That’s usually the right answer, and we’ll tell you if it isn’t.

07. Our Signature Method

The RankReady™ System

Three phases. No guesswork, no filler, no mystery invoices.

  1. 01

    Fix the Foundation

We audit your site and your Google Business Profile, then fix what’s blocking you: wrong or missing GBP categories, service areas set up incorrectly, inconsistent business info across the web, slow mobile pages, and technical issues stopping Google from reading your site properly.

  2. 02

    Build Authority

We build out the pages you need to rank for each service in each area you cover, publish content that answers what your customers actually search, and earn local links from suppliers, associations, and community sources.

  3. 03

    Convert & Scale

Rankings aren’t the goal — booked jobs are. We fix the parts of your site that lose people: slow forms, buried phone numbers, no click-to-call, weak service pages. Then we expand into new service areas and new services.

What to expect

Map Pack movement usually starts within 60 to 90 days. Meaningful organic growth takes four to six months. Competitive metros take longer.

If your profile has foundational problems, the first month often produces the biggest single jump — and we’ll know within the first week whether that’s your situation.

Anyone promising page one in 30 days is either guessing or selling you something else.

08

What Local SEO Costs

$999 to $2,499

per month

Most engagements land in this range. Smaller single-city operations sit at the lower end; multi-location companies in major metros sit at the higher end.

What moves the price

  1. How many service areas you cover
  2. How competitive your market is
  3. What condition your site is in now
  4. Whether you run one location or several

We’ll give you an exact number on your audit call — before you commit to anything.

09

What Working With Us Looks Like

  • You own everything. Your site, your Google Business Profile, your content, your rankings, your reviews. Owner access to your profile stays in your name, not ours. If we part ways, it all stays with you and keeps working

  • We won't take your competitor. We don't work with two companies in the same trade competing for the same service area. If your market's taken, we'll say so on the first call.

  • No long contracts. There's an initial ramp-up period because foundational work takes time to show. After that, month to month.

  • Reports you can actually read. Five minutes: what we did, where you rank across your service area, how many calls and forms came in, what's next.

  • Real people, US hours. We're a distributed team working 9am–6pm ET. Named contacts, direct access, calls whenever you want them.

Common Questions

How long does local SEO take for a home service business?

Google Business Profile improvements often show within 60 to 90 days. Organic rankings for competitive service keywords typically take four to six months to produce steady lead flow. If your profile has foundational problems, the first fixes can move things faster than that.

My customers don't come to my location. Does local SEO still work?

Yes — that’s most of what we do. Google classifies you as a service area business, which has its own setup rules. Getting that configuration right is one of the first things we fix, and it’s one of the most commonly botched settings on contractor profiles.

How much does local SEO cost?

Most home service engagements run $999.00 to $2499.00 per month depending on how many areas you cover, how competitive your market is, and what condition your site is in. Full pricing breakdown →

Is SEO better than buying leads from Angi or HomeAdvisor?

Different trade-offs. Lead platforms give you volume immediately, but leads are shared, prices rise, and you own nothing. SEO takes months to build and then delivers exclusive leads at a falling cost on an asset you keep. Most clients run both at first and shift as organic picks up.

Can you get me ranking across my whole service area?

Not equally, and anyone who says otherwise is overselling. Proximity is a real ranking factor you can’t override. What works is dominating the areas closest to you first, then extending outward area by area with location pages and local signals.

Do you work with more than one company in the same city?

Not in the same trade competing for the same area. If your market is already taken we’ll tell you upfront rather than split our attention.

What do I get in the free audit?

Your current Map Pack position for the searches that matter in your area, the setup errors on your Google Business Profile, which competitors are outranking you and why, and the first three things we’d fix. Yours to keep whether you hire us or not.

Do you also build websites?

Yes. We build service sites and WooCommerce stores, and we handle SEO-focused rebuilds when an existing site is holding back rankings. Website design for contractors →
